What is epidural steroid injection?
Our spine (also known as vertebral column) consists of 33 vertebrae but the five sacral and four coccygeal vertebrae are fused together, so taken as one each (so total 26 vertebrae).
The spine helps us to move and bend. It protects the spinal cord which transmits signal from our organs to brain and vice versa. Spine helps to maintain the posture; without spine you would not be able to stand erect!!! Proper alignment of vertebrae is crucial for proper functioning of spine. The cavity formed by the central portion of each vertebra forms the spinal canal. It accommodates the spinal cord and provides protection. The spinal cord is covered by the membrane called Dura. The space around the spinal cord and nerve roots in the spinal canal is known as epidural space.
Epidural injections are the nonsurgical way of treating back pain and sciatica. 80% of back pain patients can be managed with nonsurgical modalities.
How do epidural steroid injections work?
Steroids work by reducing the inflammation i.e., swelling.
What is the indication for epidural steroid injection?
-herniated discs causing nerve irritation
-spinal canal stenosis
- failed back surgery syndrome
-Spondylosis
- Spondylolysis
- Annular tear
If your pain is not responding to medicines and physiotherapy or you are having side effects to the medicines, then you are the ideal candidate for epidural steroid injection.
What are the side effects of epidural steroid injections?
Steroids act as double edge sword- if used properly, they can reduce pain without side effects. If high doses or multiple doses are used, they can cause side effects like increased blood sugar levels, weak bones, menstrual irregularity, weight gain, rarely increase in pain. In rare cases, there may be severe allergic reactions, bleeding during the procedure, infection after the procedure.
How long the effect of epidural steroid last?
The effect usually last for 3-6 months. The duration of pain relief can be increased with ultrasound guided dry needling along with epidural injection and proper physiotherapy exercises.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure takes 20-30 minutes. These procedures are done in operation theatre under X ray guidance. Patients are discharged on the same day. Work can be resumed the very next day.
Are these procedures covered under insurance?
yes, these procedures can be covered under insurance.
